No matter what side of the political aisle you fall upon, we can all agree that politics are not the same. When looking back at past political debates you can tell something has changed.
One thing that has increasingly changed within the political sphere is how we speak to one another. In an age of social media more people are willing to share their opinions because they are disguised behind a screen. The screen offers a safety that was not once offered before.
Politics are increasingly hostile due to this. Our current sitting administration has sparked strong opinions from both sides. There are folks who are big fans, and some who have some strong words. Drawn from the group of political leaders, these emotions then lead to keyboard warriors who react to what is being done. Why is this important? Politics are changing, we have to change with them to keep up or else we’ll be left behind.
We now have new tools that our parents never had when it comes to politics.
When we don’t agree with something we can leave our mark in the comment section by challenging what is being said in a post. Along with that, if we agree we can comment to show our support. We’re seeing people from all over the country come together in comment sections to voice their opinions and have mini debates with each other, something that wasn’t even possible or fathomable five presidents ago.
Now that we have new mediums to discuss with people all over the country, it has been increasingly difficult to see eye to eye with one another. When discussing humanitarian issues and topics, all sides become heated which usually leads to attacks, and both sides can be held responsible for this.
We’ve reached a crossroads with politics. When fighting for things we believe in, where do we draw the line? When living in a life where people can say virtually anything their heart desires, how do we not return with a virtual punch with the same oomph?
This is where politics are changing. When you’re passionate about something, sometimes you have to fight for it. Politics have changed; we’re all passionate about something, whether it’s big or small, it still evokes an emotion which is powerful. Now we are able to share those strong feelings with others in ways we couldn’t before, and you can speak to anyone whenever you want.
When scrolling through comment sections of posts, you can see people sharing their opinions and having conversations with people who think like them and conversations with people who don’t think like them at all.
Much like every other aspect of life, social media has infiltrated politics, it’s our job to keep up with the ever-changing world around us and stay within the dialogue and fight for what we believe in.
