The Northern Michigan Wildcats men’s basketball delivered an outstanding performance on the road, defeating the Ferris State Bulldogs men’s basketball 75–53 while senior standout Dylan Kuehl surpassed the 2,000 career-point milestone.
Kuehl led all scorers with 20 points on shooting, becoming just the fourth player in program history to reach the historic mark. The Wildcats controlled the game from start to finish behind elite defense, balanced scoring, and strong ball movement.
Head coach Matt Majkrzak praised his team’s defensive intensity following the win.
“I thought we defended really well, probably our best defensive game of the conference season,” Majkrzak said. “Considering the long trip and the weather, I couldn’t have been more proud of the overall effort.”
Northern’s defense held Ferris State to just 32.8% shooting while dominating the court and rebounding battle. A decisive 17–0 first-half run helped the Wildcats build a double-digit advantage they would never relinquish.
Majkrzak also noted the emotional and competitive energy that comes with playing at Ferris State.
“There’s a healthy respect there. We’ve had huge wins and tough losses in that gym, so I thought our guys came in with great energy and focus.”
The Wildcats extended their lead early in the second half with a 7–0 run and maintained control through efficient offense and lockdown defense.
Kuehl’s achievement was a focal point of the afternoon, but Majkrzak emphasized that his impact goes far beyond scoring.
“Every time he’s on the floor, he competes at the highest level. He cares far more about winning and his team than scoring,” Majkrzak said. “To reach 2,000 points while consistently choosing the unselfish path is remarkable.”
Majkrzak also highlighted Kuehl’s loyalty and character, noting that he turned down opportunities elsewhere to remain with the program.
“He stayed because he didn’t want to let down his teammates or the community. In today’s era, that’s incredibly special.”
With the victory, Northern moved into position for the GLIAC’s No. 1 seed entering the final weekend of regular season play.
Majkrzak acknowledged both the excitement and responsibility ahead.
“Two wins at home and you’re hosting the conference tournament that’s about as much excitement as you can ask for. Our seniors deserve the opportunity to compete for another championship.”
The Wildcats now return home looking to secure the conference title and carry their strong defensive momentum into March.
