The NMU Car Club is one opportunity for car fanatics and aficionados to come together on Northern’s campus to express their love for the automobile. John Parker, co-president of the NMU Car Club, said that the group aims to bring together all those who share a passion for automobiles.

Meetings are held every Monday at 8 p.m. in room 233 of Jamrich. At meetings, group members plan and prepare for upcoming off and on-campus events. Common events involve auto shows as well as autocrosses. The Car Club helps run these time-trialed events because autocrosses highlight safety, low-cost and active participation, Parker said.

“We typically host three to four auto crosses every year,” he added. Parker said the group volunteers at a few auto crosses around the U.P. to show their appreciation for automobiles.

When members are not discussing automobiles or partaking in auto events, they can be found participating in the Marquette and campus community.

“Some of our more recent community service projects have been participation in Make a Difference Day, raising money for the local children’s museum, as well as doing road maintenance through the Adopt-a-Highway program,” Parker said.

Currently, the Car Club operates mainly from their Facebook group and uses this outlet to keep members updated and to post photos of the group in action. Parker invites all NMU students to join the organization, whether they have a set of wheels or not.

“You do not need a car to join the club, many of our first members ride bikes, some still do,” said Parker. “The purpose of the group is to get people together who enjoy automobiles.”
