Group seeks students for volunteer services

The Student Leader Fellowship Program (SLFP) is currently recruiting members for the fall 2008 to fall 2010 semesters. They will be holding several small “meet-and-greets” throughout the beginning of February.

SLFP is a two-year leadership development program that focuses on volunteering. During the first year of the program, students will have to take a semester long two-credit Leadership Theory and Practice course, said Skyla Vandervest, the leadership program coordinator for SLFP.

The only requirements for NMU students are that they have completed at least two semesters at a college or university, have a minimum GPA of 2.3 and are willing to commit two years to SLFP, Vandervest added.

During the second year, members participate in a community service internship based on their interests. Also, while participating in SLFP, students can obtain both their citizenship and leadership edges for Superior Edge, Vandervest added.

She applied for the program her second semester.

“The program allowed me to get involved in the community in other ways that I wouldn’t have normally,” Vandervest said.

Some students might feel hesitant to join because of the two-year time commitment. However, the program is flexible for students with busy schedules, Vandervest said.

The program requires members to complete 100 hours of community service. Vandervest said the program helps students stand out to potential employers on a resumé.

“Obviously, anything you can do to show volunteerism is important, but 100 hours of service is truly impressive,” she said.

Angela Neumann, a junior accounting and financial planning major and member of SLFP is preparing to finish her two-year commitment and said her experience in the program has been rewarding.

“I knew I was going to get a lot out of [SLFP],” she said.

Neumann said she chose to get involved in the program after she was introduced to it at freshman orientation.

Junior Jeron Schmidt started the program his sophomore year and said it was appealing to him because he liked the aspect of getting involved in the community. After joining, Schmidt said that he grew more as a person.

“I’ve gotten to know myself better,” he said. “I’m a lot more confident.” He added that now employers are curious and interested when they see SLFP listed on his resumé.

SLFP will have a Banana Split Night Monday, Feb. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Payne/Halverson Lobby. To learn more about SLFP, go to www.nmu.edu/slfp or go to the Center for Student Enrichment Office. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 8 by 5 p.m. Students can also apply for the program online.
