The North Wind is an independent student publication serving the Northern Michigan University community. It is partially funded by the Student Activity Fee. The North Wind digital paper is published daily during the fall and winter semesters except on university holidays and during exam weeks. The North Wind Board of Directors is composed of representatives of the student body, faculty, administration and area media.

MLK Day events to be held across campus

Next week the Multicultural Education and Resource Center (MERC) will be hosting a trio of events to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the group will host an inauguration speech celebration in the Peter White Lounge of the University Center.

In addition to the inauguration event hosted by MERC, all LCD TVs on campus will be broadcasting Barack Obama’s inauguration as well.

On Wednesday, Jan. 21, motivational speaker Agyei Tyehimba will speak from 5-6 p.m. in the Nicolet Room in the University Center. The topic of the speech is eliminating ignorance.

Tyehimba has previously opened speeches for Martin Luther King III and Nikki Giovanni. He is currently promoting his new book, co-written with Azie Faison, “Game Over: the Rise and Fall of a Harlem Hustler,” which reached third on the bestsellers list this past October.

The week will be rounded out with a speech by well-known rapper Quest M.C.O.D.Y.

Quest M.C.O.D.Y has received acclaim for his debut album “The Light Project.”

During his career he has performed with such well known rap artists as 50 Cent, Eminem, D-12, Kanye West and Lil Wayne.
