For those looking to do something on Valentine’s Day that doesn’t involve dinner and a movie, the Peter White Public Library will be hosting a free event open to the public entitled “Love, India Style.”

The event, which begins at 1 p.m., will focus on South Asian culture, with games, food, music and crafts for the whole family.

“Love, India Style” will educate on many different aspects of South Asian life through activities that include eating South Asian treats, receiving henna tattoos and opportunities for children to try on an Indian sari and bindi and to create mandalas, beaded jewelry, spices and sand paintings.

There will be popular South Asian games to play as well, such as parcheesi, snakes and ladders and mancala, and a story tent is to be set up to hear Indian stories read aloud.

This event is a part of a larger series of events that the Peter Public White Library is hosting to encourage story-telling with children.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for NMU students with young children to enjoy together on Valentines Day as well as at the other storytelling events throughout the month,” said Margaret Boyle, programming coordinator for the event.

“February is about storytelling at Peter White Public Library, with the Global Tales Storytelling Festival celebrating the oral tradition and the love of a well told tale,” Boyle said.

“Love, India Style” will take place in the community room on the lower level of the library.
