About us

The North Wind is an independent student publication serving the Northern Michigan University community. It is partially funded by the Student Activity Fee. The North Wind digital paper is published daily during the fall and winter semesters except on university holidays and during exam weeks. The North Wind Board of Directors is composed of representatives of the student body, faculty, administration and area media.

Men’s team earns two honors

Raymont McElroy and Chris Warner from the Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team have picked up Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) post-season honors.

McElroy was chosen as the GLIAC Freshman of the Year while Warner was named to the GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team. McElroy, a redshirt freshman from Milwaukee, Wis., was second on the NMU squad in scoring (13.0 ppg) and third in rebounding (3.3 rpg) while shooting .434 percent from the floor during his rookie season. McElroy played 35.9 minutes a game, which led the Wildcats, and was second in the GLIAC in minutes played.

He started 26 of NMU’s 27 games. McElroy ranked 14th in the GLIAC in scoring, 12th in assists (3.1 apg), 11th in three-point field goal percentage (.422) and 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5). He scored a career-high 26 points against Hillsdale on Feb. 19, 2009. Warner led the ‘Cats during the 2008-09 season with 140 rebounds (5.2 rpg) and 43 steals (1.6 spg). In the GLIAC, Warner was 19th and sixth respectively.

Deacon named to all-GLIAC team

Kelsey Deacon was named to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division All-Conference Second Team. Deacon led the 2008-09 Wildcats in scoring (16.3 ppg) and assists (3.0 apg). In the GLIAC, Deacon ranked third in scoring and 15th in assists.

Deacon averaged 35.6 minutes a game, which was second in the conference, as she started all 28 games for the Wildcats. She played every minute in eight games this past season. From the free throw line, Deacon was 73-of-80 for .913 percent, which placed her second in the GLIAC. Deacon made 69 of her shots from beyond the arc to lead the ‘Cats as she was third in the GLIAC in the category. She ranked 14th in the GLIAC in three-point field goal percentage (.356) and 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2). Deacon was named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week in January when she led the ‘Cats to a pair of wins over Tiffin and Ashland. She tied a career-high with 29 points against the Eagles.

USOEC competes against Army team

United States Olympic Education Center boxers competed in a dual against the Army World Class Athlete Program on Thursday, Feb. 26, in Fort Carlson, Colo. Five of the seven USOEC boxers won their matches. “It’s a good challenge, and we get a read on our athletes,” said head USOEC boxing coach Al Mitchell. “This competition will help prepare us for Nationals, It’s a good warm-up.” The event began with Northern Michigan University sophomore Keola McKee beating 1st Lt. Michael Benedosso 2-1 at 106 pounds. NMU Freshman Chazz McDowell, competed at 132 lbs. and defeated Pfc. Connor Johnson in a 2-1 decision. Senior Ricky Alvarez overtook Spc. Dustin Lara 3-0 at 141 lbs. NMU freshman Trevor Bryan won 3-0 against Staff Sgt. Andrew Shepherd at 201+ lbs. Jesse Hart’s match was stopped in the first round. Mitchell said, “Jesse was too quick, too fast, and too strong (for opponent Spc. Zacchaeus Hardrick). Jesse was very aggressive and took control.” Freshman Rafael Santos fell to Sgt. John Franklin 3-0 at 119 lbs and Manuel Lopez was overtaken by Nathaniel Hickets 2-1 at 201 lbs.

May represents NMU in award

Derek May, from the NMU hockey team, has been designated as NMU’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He is one of 12 student-athletes from CCHA schools to be nominated. The CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be chosen from the group of nominees with the winner announced at the 2009 CCHA Awards, presented by RBC Financial Group, on Thursday, March 19. May, a senior defensemen currently has a 3.76 grade-point average. The faculty athletic representative at each school, in consultation with the head coach, selected the institution’s

Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Each school’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year serves as the school’s nominee for CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. On the ice, May has appeared in 33 games with a goal and five assists for six points.
