Community choir sings at Northern
The Marquette community and the Northern Michigan University campus will have the chance to hear the voices of the Marquette County Boys Choir, a 19 member group of 7 to 12 year olds, directed by Sharon Green, an instructor in the music department. The event takes place on Sunday, May 3, at 3 p.m. at Reynolds Recital Hall. The songs of their program will cover different types of genres. “They’re not all well-known songs,” Green said. “Our goal with the boys is quality and not so much popular songs anyone would recognize.” The group has been together for three years. “They make music and magic,” Green said. “Their voices haven’t changed since we began. Spring Needs Drive helps local charities
The Volunteer Center is hosting its annual Spring Needs drive, which will run through Wednesday, April 29. Donation boxes for the drive are located all across campus, including in the residence halls and the Woodland Apartments. People are encouraged to drop off gently used clothing, children’s items, educational materials and small household goods, said Jaime Engvall, a senior international studies and Spanish major, and a student coordinator for the Volunteer Center. “As students are moving out of dorms and houses and just changing plans for the summer, there’s a lot of material goods that just get thrown out or don’t get recycled and it’s a good time to actually give these things away to various local charities because it’s been a while since they received a lot of winter things, a lot of Christmas goodwill,” she said. All donations will go the Harbor House, which is run by the Marquette Women’s Center. Boxes not in the residence halls or the Woodland Apartments will be picked up on April 29. The rest will be removed on Friday, May 1. Anyone with questions can call the Volunteer Center at 227-2466.

Students given grants for projects
Four Northern Michigan University students have been awarded the Charles C. Spooner Grant, which provides funds to students to allow them to pursue research and creative activities. In order to qualify for the award, undergraduate and graduate students must have a GPA of 3.0 and provide evidence of commitment from a faculty member, who will serve as project adviser. Students must also have their projects endorsed by the relevant academic department. The endowment was established by the late Charles C. Spooner. Up to $1,500 in awards are presented each semester. This semester’s winners are: Julie L. Howard from Morgan Hill, Calif. Her project focuses on the diet overlap between native brook trout, non-native coho salmon and non-native steelhead in Sevenmile Creek at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. William J. Severud from Plymouth, Minn., is estimating the relative proportions of terrestrial and aquatic vegetation in beaver diets using stable isotope analysis. Michael Peters from Hart, Mich., is attempting to verify that using pairs of suppressive bacteria will decrease potato scab disease better than a single strain. Olabisi Lashore from Marquette, Mich. His research project focuses on the transportation of magnesium ions across a cell membrane.
