Designated driver cards available

The Health Promotion Office (HPO) at NMU is getting ready to distribute their latest version of the designated driver cards. The cards are designed to inform both NMU and the surrounding communities of alternative options to drinking and driving.
The newest card has four separate options for people to choose from. These include Littlez Limousine, Checker Cab, Taxi Tycoon, and St. Nick’s Limo. Three of these companies offer discounts to students when they present their NMU IDs. The cards are updated every six to 12 months.

The cab cards became available to the Marquette area in 2007. Since making the service available, the HPO is having trouble meeting up with the demands for cards from NMU students.
“It’s a good idea that has become a great idea,” said Will Getts, an HPO assistant. “We are constantly bringing them down to the residence halls.”

The HPO has distributed around 38,000 designated driver cards since the start of the program. They are currently in the process of getting 18,000 more spread around the community. Getts hopes to have the remaining cards in place by the beginning of Halloween weekend.

Overall, Getts hopes the cards will be able to deter students from making poor choices that could affect the rest of their lives.

“[The cards] are a little more incentive to grab a taxi rather than risk driving,” he said. “You grab your wallet and there are the numbers inside.”
Designated driver cards are available on campus and at various businesses in Marquette and Ishpeming.
