Golf team prepares for GVSU Tournament

The men’s golf team participated in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament in South Haven, Michigan. After two days of non-stop golf action, the Wildcats finished off their scorecard to land them in 22nd place overall. The top golfers from this tournament were Tony Bilich as he shot a 76 and ended the event with a 151 (76-75), Joe Hansen (79-84) and Mike Murphy (85-78) ended with a 163 each as they tied for 86th. Aaron Shafranski with a 172 (85-87) tied for 108th.

Head coach Dean Ellis said that the team is doing the best they can do but more practice is definitely called for if they want to see dramatic improvement.

“We had a good week of practice and preparation between both tournament to gather ourselves and focus on the tasks at hand,” Ellis said. “We are always trying to push the players to put in additional time at the driving range to work on their mechanics as well as play practice rounds so they keep focused for the competition ahead of them.”

This week, the Wildcats head to Allendale, Michigan to attend the Grand Valley State Tournament which starts on Friday, Sept. 24 through Sunday, Sept. 26. Ellis said that in order for the Wildcats to attain victory this weekend, they need to keep working hard.

“We always have a great frame of mind and we just have to make sure we stay consistent and just go out there and have fun while we do it.”

Ellis also said the Wildcats need to play as hard as they practice.

“As long as we keep the drive going and take what we learned in practice and apply it, I think we will come out on top this weekend.”

After the GVSU Tournament, the Wildcats will head to Detroit to participate in the GLIAC Championship on Sunday, Oct. 3 to finish out the fall season.
