Islam discussed in presentation

The student leader fellowship program will host a SkillBuilder! titled “Islam and the World Perpetual Confrontation or Enlightened Reconciliation? Part I.” It will be led by Professor Mohey Mowafy who will explain what Islam is and is not, the reasons behind the rise in excessive religiousness in most Abrahamic faiths in the last few decades, and will explain the reasons behind its politicization.

“The workshop will explore several paths to reduce the spectacular misunderstanding about the diversity among Muslims” said Mowafy it will “discuss ways for developing interfaith harmony and the role American Muslims can play to reach that goal.”

The SkillBuilder! will be held on Wednesday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Charcoal Room of the U.C.  This event is free and open to the public.  Part II of this workshop will take place Wednesday, March 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Charcoal Room.

Ice sheets form on campus

Ankle deep puddles in the LRC bus stop and a 20-yard wide flood in the center of the Gant-Spalding courtyard have formed into large ice sheets after, unusually high temps followed last Wednesday’s, Feb. 16 by Thursday and Friday’s freezing wind chills. Areas all across campus had problems with the rapid melting of snow, some handling it better than others, according to Associate Director of Engineering and Planning/Grounds Jim Thams.

“Public safety called at what they thought was a water main break at the athletic fields (north of the Superior Dome), because water was coming over the curb at such a rate,” he said. “The draining system is working.”

In areas where the drainage was not as effective, like the courtyard between Van Antwerp and Magers Halls or the stairs by the laundry room for the Lincoln Apartments, the facilities department uses a mix of sand and sodium chloride instead of salt on sidewalks to prevent damage done to the grass. Thams encourages students and staff to stay safe around slick spots and to call Public Safety dispatch if there is a dangerous spot of ice that has not been tended to.

Board updated on smoking ban

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees held a brief formal session before its annual retreat to receive project updates and vote on a limited number of business items.

NMU President Les Wong provided trustees with news articles that reflect the national trend toward smoke-free businesses and universities. He also pointed to the recently-released federal and state budget proposals, saying both include a number of incentives geared toward healthier campuses.

A previous survey revealed students and employees were evenly divided as to whether NMU should become entirely smoke-free. Wong told the board “the topic is not dead,” and he will work with students over the coming months to develop a proposal.

“The issue for us is how we might benefit in terms of state and federal appropriations, as well as health care savings by moving in that direction. It’s not only about smoking.”
