Native American Heritage Month celebrated with rice

A Wild Ricing Stick Workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Beaumier Upper Peninsula Heritage Center.

November is Native American Heritage Month, and the workshop will feature Roger LaBine. LaBine grew up near Watersmeet, Mich. and is a member of the Lac Veux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

LaBine has been harvesting wild rice, or manoomin, most of his life. His elders taught him techniques for harvesting wild rice.

April Lindala, director of the Center for Native American Studies, has attended two of LaBine’s wild rice workshops.

“You’re learning not only how to make sticks, but why it is culturally significant,” Lindala said.

To sign up for this workshop, call (906) 227-3212, email [email protected] or go to the Beaumier Heritage Center.

“You’re gaining a skill but also a lesson in traditional Anishinaabe culture,” Lindala said.

City parking ban in effect

The winter parking ban for all streets within the Marquette city limits began Nov. 1. It requires all vehicles to find off-street parking between 1 and 6 a.m.

The ban will be in effect until April 1. The fine for violating the parking ban is $50. If the fee is left unpaid after 14 days, the fine increases to $55.

“There is a winter parking ban to facilitate snow plowing for city streets,” said Marquette Police officer Lt. Mark Wuori.

All overnight visitors must park their cars off the street during the ban or they will be ticketed as well.
“Four or more unpaid parking tickets result in vehicles getting booted and total fines have to be paid before the boot gets removed,” Wuori said.

To learn more about the parking ordinance, visit mqtcty.org or call Public Works at (906) 228-0444.
