The Marquette Aquamen introduce club sport

Did you know that hockey could be played underwater? Well, the Marquette Aquamen do just that.

Hockey players take the sport underwater with NMU’s new club sport, The Marquette Aquamen. The sport has been a community organization for three years, but NMU sunk their puck in the net as a club sport last semester.

“It’s hard to get people to stay. They come to play one time and then don’t come back. It might be because it’s scary and a little
intense. It takes a while to get used to. There’s a lot of body contact,” President Sari Nomura said.

Nomura is also in charge of
recruitment. Recruitment is based on inviting friends and developing a sense of community within the club, she said. An invitation through a friend was how Nomura first got involved.

Her and the players became friends from the team, even spending time together outside of practice. Nomura said practice is not very competitive.

“Some people are competitive, but I just like to have fun,”
Nomura said.

It is a student organization, but it’s still open to community members. People of all ages are encouraged to try out for the club. The first three practices are free, but there is a charge of $20 for students and $25 for non-students.

The Marquette Aquamen meet from 8 p.m to 10 p.m on Tuesday at the Marquette High School pool.
