Even the smallest changes can help make a difference in sustainability, and NMU’s EcoReps work to educate their peers on sustainable choices and encourage environmentally conscious living. The organization created three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and economic. “It’s a safe space for us to learn about what our impact on the environment is and to talk and get the conversation going for the environment,” EcoRep member Sam Lievense, junior environmental studies and sustainability major, said. Each member is assigned to subcommittee and Lievense is a part of the social subcommittee, which organizes different workshops on campus throughout the year. Some of these recurring workshops include Fix-It Friday to mended students’ torn clothing or backpacks and Tune-Up Tuesday to give minor repairs to bikes and encourage bike use on campus, Lievense said. “[EcoReps] is a great organization to meet new people and learn,” Lievense said. “My favorite part is just hanging out with my buds and learning about the environment. It’s awesome.”
