Students were challenged to unleash their creativity during the Student Art League’s (SAL) Sticker-Thon. This event was held on Oct. 23, and all students were encouraged to create their own sticker or use the provided stickers to decorate a canoe from the Water is Life festival held last semester.

The homemade stickers were created using packing tape, parchment paper and cardstock. A variety of drawing materials were also provided.

“We hosted a coloring booth [at the Water is Life festival], and we took all the drawings from people, had them sign them, and they got turned into waterproof stickers that we’re sticking on the canoe,” SAL Social Media Manager Loreli Mortimer said.

Additionally, this event supported the Student Art League’s overall mission to make art more accessible for busy college students.

“This is one of those art events on campus that specifically is a space for students to come in and make art,” Mortimer said. “It’s really important to emphasize intersectionality within art because art is for everyone, and we want to celebrate all different backgrounds in art.”

Hyde Whitney, president of the Student Art League, emphasized that students do not have to be studying art to come to these events; their main focus is simply making art accessible for everyone.

“It does not matter what degree path you are in. We have several different options, no matter what level of creativity they have,” Whitney said.

Furthermore, a significant amount of planning goes into all the Student Art League events.

“It’s a lot of prepping and planning,” Mortimer said. “We have a whole officer team, there are four of us, and we work in tandem to make sure everything gets posted in time.”

The Student Art League hosts community events such as the Sticker-Thon every other week. Students can find more information on The Hub.
