NMU Queers and Allies collaborated with the Latinx Student Union and the Black Student Union to host a Halloween party for students on Oct. 29. The groups provided snacks, games and a movie for participants to enjoy.
The Latinx Student Union provided a traditional Mexican game similar to Bingo called Loteria. There were also mocktails, snow cones and a variety of Halloween candy for students to enjoy, along with a showing of “Ghostbusters” (2016).
“We just want to have fun, because that’s the point of the club, which is to have fun regardless of whatever else is happening [in the world],” Queers and Allies president Abigail Strassburg said.
Group members emphasized the importance of relaxing after being busy with classes and homework.
“Especially during finals, it’s just a nice place for people to not think about school,” said Cameron Jenerou, Secretary of Queers and Allies.
Both Strassburg and Jenerou said the main goal of the party was simply for students to have a space to celebrate and have some fun.
“A lot of people think we’re like an activism group, but [the club is] just a nice, safe space for everybody,” Jenerou said.
Strassburg said this was the first year Queers and Allies invited other groups to host the Halloween party with them.
If students are interested in getting involved with Queers and Allies, they can attend their meetings on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. in Jamrich Hall. Students are also welcome to join the annual Transgiving party on Nov. 20, which can be found on The Hub.
