Students gathered on Feb. 11 to learn about time management in the Time Management workshop hosted by Wellbeing Promotions. The workshop was part of the Adulthood 101 series, where students can learn skills that are needed to succeed in college.

The workshop was led by NMU graduate student Julia Illy, who covered different time management strategies, one of them being the ‘Eat The Frog” strategy.

“The idea [of this strategy] is that you pick the tasks that you’re dreading the most, and you kind of force yourself to get it done first,” Illy said. “That way, it is out of the way, and you definitely have enough time to do it because you set aside the full day, but then you don’t have to spend the rest of your day worrying about it,” Illy said.

Next, Illy explained why time management is so important for college students and how it can look different for everyone.

“Time management can look a little bit different for everyone, but the most important thing is finding a way to organize the time that works for you,” Illy said.

Illy also went over how to spot poor time management as well as how to correct those actions. She said that factors such as procrastination and stress can be an effect of poor time management. Students also had the opportunity to watch videos that explained the psychological science behind why we procrastinate and how to enter flow state.

On top of that, Illy emphasized that although time management is important, it is a skill one has to learn over time.

“It’s important to practice compassion with yourself if you do not stick to your goals,” she said. “Remember, you’re developing a new skill. No one is immediately perfect at anything, so if you do break one of your goals, it’s okay.”

The next Adulthood 101 workshop will be Wildcats Don’t Waste, held on Feb. 16 at 7pm. More information can be found on The Hub.
