Lake freighters were found at the ore dock. To be specific, it was the Joseph L. Block, a 1976 bulk carrier 221 meters long and currently making her way through the Great Lakes carrying cargo. With her was the tug-barge Maumee and her frequent companion, the tugboat Victory. The Poe Lock, the oldest of the Soo Locks that caused the tragic death of its namesake and engineer (a former Civil War general), reopened on March 25, officially restarting the shipping season, which means the ships won’t stop coming through the docks near Presque for roughly ten months.
We’re lucky to live in a port town, with marvels of maritime engineering passing through town and docking for hours just a few minutes from our campus. If I can get just one person to go stand on the beach and watch the ships come in, I’ll have done my job.
