DEVELOPING EMPATHY - NMU students gather in a group for their assigned “family.” Each participant in the simulation is assigned a family to work with as they view what it’s like to experience poverty. The simulation lasts three hours, each hour acting as a month of living in poverty.

ADVOCACY — EQMI is an LGBTQ + advocacy and victim advocate services organization nonprofit that is based in lower Michigan that advocates for the rights of LGBTQ + individuals and communities as well as providing victim services. Mandy Bonesteel is the current rural outreach coordinator based in the U.P. and is working to provide these services to community members.

Professors Corner: Basic human needs drive us to learn

In the Oct. 1 edition of the North Wind, William Bergmann's Professor's Corner column titled "Contract denied for the right reasons" stated "Students want to receive the best education for their dollar." That is indeed a valid argument since in the U.S., students and their families pay great amounts of money for attending college.

The North Wind is an independent student publication serving the Northern Michigan University community. It is partially funded by the Student Activity Fee. The North Wind digital paper is published every Friday during the fall and winter semesters except on university holidays and during exam weeks. The North Wind Board of Directors is composed of representatives of the student body, faculty, administration and area media.
