Signs of change— Marquette's No Kings protest

On Saturday morning, dozens of protestors lined the bridge above US-41 for the second No Kings protest against the current presidential administration’s policies and values. In the 2024 presidential election, Marquette County was the only Democratic county in the Upper Peninsula, with roughly 3,000 votes flipping the county for Kamala Harris, yet No Kings rallies also turned out across the U.P. last weekend. In Marquette, discussion on the bridge was often drowned out by cars on the highway below honking their support.

A common refrain in the modern political fight is that the younger generation are the true progressives, but the protest on Saturday was intergenerational, and many attended with spouses and children. One mother told the North Wind to make sure get a picture of her daughter. Upon seeing the camera, the young protestor held up a handmade sign nearly half her size and behind her sunglasses, flashed a smile with her two front teeth missing.
