About us

The North Wind is an independent student publication serving the Northern Michigan University community. It is partially funded by the Student Activity Fee. The North Wind digital paper is published daily during the fall and winter semesters except on university holidays and during exam weeks. The North Wind Board of Directors is composed of representatives of the student body, faculty, administration and area media.

    Retrace the wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald

    On this date in 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost in Lake Superior. All 29 crew members lost their lives when the ship sank on the eastern waters of Lake Superior. At the time, she was the largest vessel in the Great Lakes. To this day she is the largest ship to ever be lost there. Below you can retrace the steps of the great ship until it sank.
