With all that’s going on in the world today with COVID-19 many everyday activities for students had to be changed just a little bit so that everyone can stay healthy and safe.

One of these everyday activities that some students love to do is go to the PEIF where many will enjoy the open gyms or just lifting weights in the weight room.

So what is the PEIF going to do to protect the students from the pandemic?

Katie Moe, campus recreation and fitness manager spoke about some of the policies they will have in place this year.

“All users will be required to wear a mask and present their ID (per usual), along with practicing social distancing while in the building, we also ask that you sanitize frequently along with sanitizing the equipment you use,” Moe said.  “We also ask that you come to the facility “rec ready” meaning they will bring what they need with them to the facilities examples would be water bottles, mats, etc.”

Students can check out all other policies on their website.

In the past the PEIF has been known for their open gyms, however, for the time being there will not be any drop-in programs.

There are many other fun activities that reside in the PEIF that will be open. Those activities include a golf simulator, rock wall, the pool and finally the weight room.

Many students love to go workout in the weight room so what will that look like this coming fall, well Katie Moe commented on the weight room operations.

“The weight room is open to students as well as the cardio deck. We did make some modifications to the basketball court so that we could fit more cardio machines, so only one court is open,” Moe said.

This coming fall the pool will also be open in the PEIF however there are some modifications that have been made to open swims.

Diving boards at this time will not be available as of right now, along with that the capacity of the pool is 19 individuals. If you are looking to participate in the swims you must get a PEIF ticket to show the staff before getting in the pool. There will also be a shower to clean off before and after the swim.

Like last year students will also be able to rent things like Kayaks, and standing paddleboards this system has been moved online to accommodate social distancing if students would like to rent the equipment they can go to www.nmu.edu/recreation and click ORC.

Due to the fit zone not being open at this time the PEIF is also renting out Fat tire bikes (these rentals are free unlike the Kayaks and standing paddleboards) again just go to the website to rent these bikes.

So as students return to campus they will still be able to go to the PEIF and participate in some of these fun activities.
