Every year of professional football, the 1972 Miami Dolphins have to wait and sweat out the final loss of a currently undefeated team to keep their record of perfection intact. The closest call to date was the 2007 New England Patriots, who were one game away from being 19-0, and standing with Vince Lombardi’s trophy. The New York Giants ended that dream in dramatic fashion.
The Green Bay Packers have a chance this season to do what the Patriots were unable to do in 2007-2008. The Giants are once again in the way of perfection, but this time, perfection will be obtained. I, Aaron Loudenslager, personally guarantee an undefeated season for the Packers.
The Green Bay Packers have won 17 straight games, beginning from the end of last season. One big reason is of course current MVP favorite, Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers has simply been lights out this year. He shows his dynamic efficiency with only four interceptions thrown, compared to his 33 touchdown passes. To top it off, his quarterback rating is a whopping 127.7, which would be a NFL record for a single season if Rodgers keeps it at that current level.
The only thing that worries me about predicting that the Packers will go undefeated is their defense. Their pass defense is 31st in the NFL, which is surprising given that the Packers’ had a top 5 defense just last year.
Part of the reason the Packers defense is giving up more yards, both on the ground and through the air, is because the Green Bay offense has allowed the defense to play a little looser in their coverages in order to waste game clock. This makes it harder for opposing teams to catch up to the amount of points the high-powered Packers offense puts on the scoreboard every week. They have the ability to stop a good team from scoring points when the situation requires it, as when Green Bay was able to hold the Atlanta Falcons to 14 points on the road.
The rest of the Packers regular season schedule includes few challenges. The Packers should be able to handle the Raiders, who are somewhat inconsistent, along with the Bears and Lions, who also play the Packers at home. Green Bay should also have no problem at Kansas City against the Chiefs because the Chiefs have the 27th worst passing defense. Rodgers should be able to throw against them all day.
The toughest game left for Green Bay in the regular season is this weekend against the Giants. Why? First, it is always hard to win on the road in the NFL, even against not so good teams. Second, the Giants have the 5th best pass defense in the NFL, which should be able to slow down Rodgers, at least a little bit. Lastly, the Giants are in a fight to try and wrestle control of the NFC East from the Dallas Cowboys, while the Packers are basically looking to gain home-field advantage throughout the NFL playoffs.
I think the Packers-Giants game will be a close one, but I think Green Bay will end up with the victory. Not only will Green Bay beat the Giants, but the Packers will have an undefeated regular season and expand that success to an undefeated playoff season, ending it all with the Lombardi trophy, just like last year.
The Green Bay Packers have destiny on their side to do what no other team in NFL history has ever done — go 19-0 in a NFL season. Rodgers will carry the Green Bay Packers with his golden-MVP arm to another Superbowl championship.
