Getting the only win for the All-Navy team was Sheldon Wilder, who defeated freshman Ramon Moreno with a pin in the first round during a 60 kg match.

USOEC head coach Rob Hermann said he was pleased with how his underclassmen performed against the All-Navy team and he saw a lot of mistakes made by his team that he wants to fix.

“My young guys performed and did a good job,” Hermann said. “Our guys go to the (Olympic training) room and work on their mistakes. We are perfectionists, so we never want mistakes, but there were some tonight that we need to work on.”

Even though the USOEC primarily focuses on Greco-Roman style wrestling, the team went on to compete against the All-Navy team in freestyle matches to help the All-Navy team as they prepare for their upcoming championship. The USOEC was victorious in the freestyle matches, winning four matches to the All-Navy team’s sole victory.

Jones got the first win in the freestyle matches with a pin against Moreno in the 55 kg  to give the All-Navy team the early lead in the competition.

In the 60 kg, USOEC freshman Mike Mioni got a win to up the freestyle competition with a win over Wilder by a score of 4-1 and 3-2.

Sophomore Thrasher Porcher also got a victory in the 66 kg, following right after Mioni’s match, by defeating Zacher with a score of 7-0 and 3-0.

USOEC sophomore Parker Betts, who did not compete in the match against the All- Navy team, said getting a win against the All-Navy team was a big deal and it showed just how good the squad is this year.

“It was great to watch these guy compete,” Betts said. “Those Navy guys are a tough team. It really goes to show that our USOEC guys are in top shape right now. The younger guys haven’t had a lot of competition lately so they were more than ready to go.”

The All-Navy wrestling team has been here since Tuesday, Feb. 19, as they are training with the USOEC Greco-Roman team until Thursday, March 14, as the All-Navy team prepares for the upcoming Armed Forces Wrestling Championships.

The event will be taking place on Saturday, March 16, at the  Mcguire Air Force Base located in Trenton, N.J.
