Northern Michigan University’s Physical Education and Instructional Facility has closed its open swim due to a lack of lifeguards.

The PEIF announced Tuesday morning through email that the open swim would close beginning Wednesday morning, Sept. 29.

The open swim was held from 11-1 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

“We are hoping this will be a temporary closure,” Rec Sports Staff wrote in the email.

For those interested in becoming a lifeguard, Rec Sports is willing to pay for the lifeguard certification fees as long as students hired as lifeguards will commit to three semesters as a PEIF lifeguard.

Applications to become a lifeguard will close on Oct. 8.

“All potential student employees are also asked to submit a cover letter with their application and return those materials to PEIF Office #126,” Student Employment with Rec Sports webpage said.

Any additional questions regarding the closure of open swim or regarding lifeguard applications can be directed to Rec Sports via email at [email protected] or by phone at 906-227-2110 or 906-227-2519.
