The North Wind is an independent student publication serving the Northern Michigan University community. It is partially funded by the Student Activity Fee. The North Wind digital paper is published daily during the fall and winter semesters except on university holidays and during exam weeks. The North Wind Board of Directors is composed of representatives of the student body, faculty, administration and area media.

Car accident in Ishpeming leaves one NMU student dead

A two-vehicle accident on U.S. 41 in Ishpeming, Mich. at approximately 10:23 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1. claimed the life of a 19-year-old female driver and sent another driver to the hospital with minor injuries.

An NMU student, 19-year-old Samantha Bonovich, was attempting to turn west on U.S. 41 from the Family Dollar Store parking lot when she was struck by a freight liner dump truck traveling east toward the stoplight at U.S. Highway 41 and Second Street. Bonovich died at the scene of the accident.

According to preliminary police reports from the City of Ishpeming, the driver of the dump truck, 46-year-old Jeffrey Johnson, was not at fault. Johnson is a Marquette native.

He was brought to Bell Memorial Hospital following the accident and treated for minor injuries.

Funeral services for Samantha Bonovich will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home, located at 400 N. Third St., P.O. Box 364 in Ishpeming.
